The vertical banner flags are called
Dar Cho
in Tibetan and are attached to poles using the cord sewn along the edge. These flags consist of five colored flags sewn together, each with a seperate colored streamer that hangs off of the ends. The five colours can represent the five directions, the five wisdoms, the five meditation Buddhas the five mental attributes, or the five realms of existence (amongst other representations) with the blue flag atop symbolizing the sky, followed by white for cloud, red for fire, green for water, & yellow for earth.
Each colored flag measures approximately 16" high x 19" wide without the streamer. The flags are sewn together and there is a colored streamer tassle that hangs off of each flag that can measure approximately 4" high x 8" wide. The total height for one
dar-cho
set is approximately 6 1/2 feet. These flags are printed on 100% polyester, which is regarded as better than cotton for withstanding the elements.
These flags were purchased from one of the street vendors in the bustling markets in Nepal. The flags are printed on rough grade polyester and may appear slightly different to the ones shown above. These are the grade of prayer flags that most of the locals seemed to be buying. For flags with higher quality printing on export grade polyester or cotton, please have a look at our other
